About Lanarkshire

Lanarkshire offers endless places to visit and things to do. As well as beautiful scenery offering amazing walking and hiking trails and perfect routes for cyclists and other outdoor enthusiasts, including stunning mountainous backdrops. Woods and forests tumble down the slopes of the hills and frame its roads and rivers. Two of the six UNESCO world heritage sites in Scotland are located in Lanarkshire, New Lanark and the Antonine Wall.

Crawford - a well-connected yet rural village

Crawford, South Lanarkshire, is an attractive village in the Southern Uplands with a population of around 300. The village is close to an old Roman road and has links with Sir William Wallace who was connected to Crawford Castle, a nearby ruin. There is a corner shop in the village which is just three miles from Abington and excellent connections with the national motorway network both north and south. Glasgow and Carlisle are just under an hour’s drive.

Biggar-a traditional Scottish market town

Biggar is a historic market town on the northern edge of the Southern Uplands and retains its medieval layout. The main street is lined with centuries-old houses and Biggar Kirk dates from the 16th century.  Biggar has associations with historical figures, including William Wallace and Bonnie Prince Charlie. Biggar has a selection of independent shops and places to eat and drink, including an excellent fish and chip shop. A picturesque town, it also has Scotland’s only permanent puppet theatre, the Biggar & Upper Clydesdale Museum while the Biggar Gasworks Museum is the only preserved gas works in Scotland.

The Lowther Hills – Cradle of Snowsports in Scotland

Lowther Hills is a small, family-friendly ski centre nested between Scotland’s two highest villages, Wanlockhead and Leadhills, which boast Scotland’s oldest Curling and Skiing heritage. Lowther Hills Ski centre is just 11 miles away from our location. There is skiing and snowboarding for all levels, from beginners to more advanced. The winter sports area is situated between the elevations of 580 and 718 m and there are 2 km of slopes available. There are also 3 lifts to transport the guests.

Historic Monuments

South Lanarkshire has an abundance of ancient sites and historic monuments including Bothwell Castle, built in the late 1200s and passed back and forth between English and Scottish hands. Bothwell was viciously fought over during the wars with England. New Lanark is a former 18th century cotton spinning mill village located on the banks of the Falls of Clyde. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001 and is an exceptional example of a purpose-built 18th century mill village.

Falls of Clyde Nature Reserve and Visitors Centre

The Falls of Clyde are 22 miles from our park. Famous for its amazing waterfalls, scenic woodland walks and its abundance of wildlife. Over 100 bird species have been recorded including dipper, raven and kingfisher. Daubenton’s bats can be spotted feeding over the river in the evenings. Badgers forage amongst the undergrowth and otters are sometimes seen along the riverbank.
